9th Building Bridges annual showcase

 Clothesline will have a one day appearance at the 9th Building Bridges annual showcase on Tuesday April 7 at the UMass Amherst Ralph W. Bromery Center for the Arts.

The Showcase Event is an annual gathering where UMass staff and their creative talents take center stage. This year, the showcase features work from over 70 worker artists across campus. The showcase—curated and installed by participants in the Showcasing Worker Artists class, a core Building Bridges offering through the Partnership for Worker Education—will be on view from 12-7pm, with catered receptions at 12:30pm and 4:30pm and artist demonstrations and workshops scheduled throughout the afternoon. There will be various performances by the UMass worker artists including music and poetry. The event is free and open to the public. A full schedule will be found on the PWE Building Bridges Website closer to the day.

Backyard climbing structure

 For years I've been drawing and painting this climbing structure in our back yard. For some reason it always cheers me up, like a friendly little being looking back at me and reminding me of happy times with my kids. I've done it in different media and seasons, although with a predilection for snow scenes, and made it my avatar on line. Alas, all things must pass; the structure was falling apart and becoming an attractive nuisance, so today we had it taken away to be supplanted by a garden shed. Here is a little farewell tribute to a long standing muse.

The light on the clothesline and trees was one of the first things I noticed on arrival. I did this in three sessions on site plus some little touches at home.

I've done this scene a couple times before. There's something adorable about its gently curved profile that keeps bringing me back. The late afternoon light in the fall is always spectacular.

Breakwater, Morning; Breakwater, Afternoon

The same subject painted from opposite sides in the morning and afternoon. I just realized, it kind of reminds me of the Sphinx, who asked that riddle about who walks on four legs in the morning, two in the afternoon and three in the evening. I'll have to go back and do an evening version.

I started this back in January, during the only decent snowstorm of the winter. There's also a shot of the first pass, showing how I was trying to get the movement and feeling of the snow down first, filling the details later but always referring back to the initial sketch; and my snow painting setup, Artistic In Tent.

MICAfest 2024

 Sunscreen and Three Women are up at the Bombyx Center for Arts & Equity as part of MICAfest 2024, Art for Change: The M/others’ View.

There's lots of other interesting artwork on display, connected to non-traditional conceptions of motherhood. Unfortunately the gallery is currently only open during other scheduled events and performances, so if you happen to be attending one of these during May be sure to traipse down the hall to the Peacock Gallery during intermission. There is a possibility of scheduling additional viewing times which I will announce if they pan out.

There is also a reception May 25, 2:00 - 4:00, which I won't be able to attend, but which should be fascinating. The reception is free, but please RSVP so they can plan accordingly.

First snowstorm, first snowstorm painting

This was done using a mixture of magnetite, chalk, and home-brewed linseed oil as an underpainting. It's good for that purpose because it dries quickly and has a nice feel, somewhere between charcoal and sumi ink. I was trying to primarily catch the movement of the snow and letting the static structures fall into place as the picture developed. , and a video of me in the act

Abandoned Getty station

 Today I am thankful that they didn't tear down this skeevy old abandoned Getty station before I had a chance to paint it again. I did a little watercolor sketch back in April and always wanted come back and do a larger oil painting. This what I was able to do in about two hours - the drawing and overall block in.

Lake Warner Shadow

I was struck by the bright light on the yellow tree and the cast shadow with hot colors glowing out of it.

I worked on it over two visits to the site in my kayak, Sketchpad*L, with additional touching up at home. I'm calling it done for now - it's at that dangerous stage where I'm tempted to do little tweaks and details that could lead to killing the original feeling. I'll let it marinate for a while and see if there is really anything that needs to be added or subtracted.
