Mr Cone

Another crack at Mr. Cone.I'm still working on my enlarged sight sizing technique, this time using pencil on Bristol paper and trying for more precision.

I didn't have much time on site but was able to map out the locations of the principal elements on the page and start a rudimentary sketch. I took a photo ref and used that to fill in a lot of the detail at home, while simplifying and puling the composition together. The last two pix are my previous Mr. Cone attempts.

Pencil drawing of Mr. Cone, a soft-serve ice cream place in Chicopee MA. It has a retro look, partly due to being adapted from an old Tastee Freeze building

Rough sketch of Mr. Cone, featuring construction lines to find proportions and squiggly lines trying to catch the shapes and contours.

Watercolor of Mr. Cone, with car parked by the side.

Pen and black and white ink on toned paper sketch of Mr. Cone building, with people buying ice cream at the sales window and sitting at tables in the parking lot.

While I was drawing, a guy came out of the house behind me and asked if I was working on a total renovation - "This is your third time out here!" It turns out there was a plan afoot to install barriers to protect the cone eaters sitting in the parking lot from speeding cars, and he thought I was connected with that. He said he'd lived in that house all his life and remembered when the building had been a Tastee Freeze back in the 1960s. I had been curious about the style of building, especially after I saw excellent local artist @ann.cloutier.art 's painting of Cindy's Drive-in, clearly adapted from the same design.

Piedmont show

Backyard Snow, Winter Fugue, and Little House in the Big Backyard have all been accepted for the upcoming Piedmont show.

Oil painting. Thick snow swirls amidst trees and play structure, simultaneously obscuring and defining the objects and the space between them.

Swirling snowflakes and snow covered branches create a counterpoint of line, texture, and motion.

A dense snowstorm engulfs a blue and red shed against a backdrop of trees and underbrush

Backyard Snow received a Merit Award.
